Celebrating Father's Day When He is Absent

Fathers can be absent on Father’s Day for many reasons. They could be away for work, or he is no longer here on this earth. It is emotional celebrating Father’s Day when one has lost his/her father. So, for those of you whose father has passed on to a better place, here are some suggestions on how to celebrate Father’s Day without him:

Grieve and remember him
Take your time to grieve and remember him. It could be one of the most difficult days in your life. Perhaps sitting down and spending time with family members and close family friends to learn some interesting facts about your father might help to remember stories and deeds about your father. Nothing keeps someone alive like a good story.

Do something he enjoyed
Is there something your father enjoyed more than anything else? Did he collect anything? Favourite movies or songs that he likes in particular? Take some time to do something your father would have done previously to commemorate him. You might be surprised to find what you two have in common.

Value the lessons he taught you
Celebrate the good times you had with him and remember the wisdom he shared with you because they shape part of who you are. Value and honor your father by applying the wisdom and guides in life he shared.

Celebrate ‘Grandfather’s Day’
If your father is absent, switch your focus to the men who are present in your life, such as grandfather, uncle, godfather or a close family friend. Spend time with the caring guys that you consider as special or valuable on Father’s Day to acknowledge and cherish them.

Thank your mother
Perhaps one of the best way to celebrate Father’s Day when you don’t have a father is to celebrate your mother. You mother is taking on both roles, so she deserves to be appreciated. Losing a father for one could meant losing a husband for another; it is just as hard, if not harder for her on days like these. Show your appreciation and gratitude to your mother on this day, just as you would have to your father.
